Microsoft Clarity Installation Made Easy

If you're looking for simple and easy Microsoft Clarity installation steps, we've got you covered. In this article, we share the two best methods for installing Microsoft Clarity.

What Is Microsoft Clarity?

Microsoft Clarity is a free user behavior analytics tool that helps you understand how users interact with your websites and internal applications.

Microsoft Clarity VisualSP integration

It goes beyond website tracking, providing valuable insights into how employees navigate and utilize your company's internal software or how users interact with your website. You can access screen recordings, scroll data, heatmaps, and more.

This can be incredibly useful for improving user experience, identifying pain points, and boosting your applications' adoption.

How to Install Microsoft Clarity

Here are our two favorite ways to install Microsoft Clarity:

Option #1: Install Manually

This approach works for simple websites, but for multiple sites or internal applications, it can be tedious. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Sign Up: Head to the Microsoft Clarity website (https://clarity.microsoft.com/) and create a free Clarity account.
  2. Create a Project: Once logged in, add a new project. This signifies the website or application you want to track user behavior on.
  3. Assign Permissions: Decide who can access the Clarity data for your project by assigning admins and members.
  4. Enable Tracking (The Tricky Part):
  • Copy the Code: Microsoft Clarity provides a unique tracking code snippet.
  • Manual Code Insertion: You'll need to manually insert this Clarity tracking code into the <head> section of each webpage or application you want to track.

This manual insertion can be a hassle, especially for:

  • Multiple Websites: A pain, since you'd have to add the code into every single website's HTML
  • Internal Applications: For internal apps (like SharePoint or Dynamics 365), you might need developer assistance to implement the code. In fact, with this manual installation, you are not able to activate Microsoft Clarity on certain applications, such as Dynamics 365. That's why in these cases, we recommend option 2.

Option #2: Streamlined Microsoft Clarity Setup with VisualSP

The second installation method involves activating a Microsoft Clarity subscription through VisualSP. We highly recommend this option if you are going to use Clarity for multiple internal web applications.

VisualSP is a Digital Adoption Platform (DAP) that is a helpful layer on top of your web applications. It provides users with context-sensitive resources and guidance directly within the applications they're using.

VisualSP automatically creates both a Microsoft Clarity account and a project for you. Their browser extension then handles user behavior data tracking, eliminating the need to insert code into each application. This saves you significant time and effort, especially when dealing with multiple internal web apps.

Here are the steps:

  1. Free Trial: Sign up for a free VisualSP trial.
  2. Automated Setup: VisualSP automatically creates a new Microsoft Clarity project for you.
  3. Automatic Tracking: Forget adding code to every app! VisualSP automatically activates tracking on popular applications like SharePoint and Dynamics. It's also easy within VisualSP to activate tracking for other web applications.

That's it! VisualSP takes care of the complex setup steps, letting you focus on analyzing user behavior data in Clarity.

Using Microsoft Clarity

Now that you're set up (hopefully with VisualSP's ease!), let's explore how Clarity helps you understand user behavior:

  • Clarity Dashboard: Get a quick overview of user trends across your applications (e.g., e-commerce, marketing). Identify areas of high engagement or friction points at a glance.
  • Session Playbacks: See user journeys firsthand! Watch real-time recordings of users navigating your applications, click by click. Identify roadblocks and areas of confusion to improve UI and user experience.
  • Heatmaps: Visualize user behavior with heatmaps that highlight areas of high clicks, scrolls, and mouse movements. Use this to optimize page layouts, prioritize content, and improve user flow.

These are just a few key features. You can use Microsoft Clarity to analyze data, brainstorm solutions, and refine user experiences based on real user behavior.
